The room itself had presence. There was a hush that settled over even my children as we descended the few steps down from the floor of the nave into the cell where Lady Julian had once lived. The thick stone walls contributed to it, but there was more. The weight of history and prayer could be felt. This wasn’t even the original room where Julian had lived. Her cell and the church had been destroyed by a German bomb in 1942. The bomb fell directly into the tower whose three-foot thick walls–already 800 years old–absorbed the blast.
